The indicator tracks protected areas as compiled by the WPDA. The IUCN defines a protected area as a “a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the longterm conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.” Information on designation, administrative and level of responsibility, and spatial scale are also provided.
