Components of domestic material consumption

The indicator Domestic Material Consumption (DMC) is defined as the total amount of material directly used in an economy. DMC equals Direct Material Input (DMI) minus exports. DMI measures the direct input of materials for the use in the economy. DMI equals Domestic Extraction (DE) plus imports.

Contribution to the green economy: 

Direct materials used in consumption gives an indication of the use of one type of resources, i.e. the material resources, as an aggregate. This generates environmental pressures and therefore if less material resources are used is better for the economy.

Use of the indicator as more than a rough indicator. The number of tons used is a composite of materials with very different amounts of scarcity and influences on the environment.
