    Human resources in science and technology (% of active population)

    The percentage of the population that meets the following three criteria, as a percentage of the total population aged 25-64, and active in the labour market (e.g. employed or unemployed by available to work): (i) aged 25-64, (ii) active in the labour market (e.g. employed or unemployed but available to work), and (iii) has successfully completed studies in science and technology (beyond secondary school education, e.g. at college, university etc.) or are employed in science and technology.

    Eco-innovation activities are one of five areas in the Eco-Innovation Scoreboard. The index for this area is calculated based on three indicators: Implementation of innovation activities to reduce material inputs per unit of output in companies, implementation of innovation activities to reduce energy inputs per unit of output in companies and firms with environmental management (ISO 14001) systems.

    Resource Efficiency outcomes

    The indicator comprises socio-economic outcomes, representing one of five thematic groupings in the Eco-Innovation Scoreboard. The index for this area is calculated based on four indicators: material productivity, water productivity, energy productivity and GHG emissions intensity

    GHG emissions intensity (CO2e/GDP)

    "This indicators illustrates the amount of GHG emissions generated per unit of GDP. It is calculated as total GHG emissions (expressed in CO2 equivalents) divided by GDP (expressed in Purchasing Power Standards/PPS)."

    Socio-Economic outcomes

    The indicator comprises socio-economic outcomes, representing one of five thematic groupings in the Eco-Innovation Scoreboard. The index for this area is calculated based on three indicators: Exports of products from eco-industries (% of total exports), employment in eco-industries (% of total workforce) and turnover in eco-industries.

    Exports of products from eco-industries (% of total exports)

    The indicator captures the share of eco-industry exports in total export (in %). The subsectors that make up the eco-industry are: air pollution control, water pollution control, waste disposal, monitoring equipment, other environmental equipment, solar thermal, photovoltaics and hydropower.

    Innovation Union Scoreboard

    The Innovation Union Scoreboard is an instrument of the European Commission, developed under the Lisbon Strategy and revised after the adoption of the Europe2020 Strategy to provide a comparative assessment of the innovation performance of EU Member States.
    The measurement framework used in the Innovation Union Scoreboard distinguishes between 3 main types of indicators and 8 innovation dimensions, capturing in total 25 different indicators.

    Governments environmental and energy R&D appropriations and outlays (% of GDP)

    Government Budget Appropriations or Outlays on Research and Development (GBAORD) data show how much governments spend on research and development, as a proportion of total gross domestic product (GDP). The data is available broken down by the socio-economic objectives of the research and development, and by the type of initiative which has received funding. Funded sectors include government establishments, business enterprise, private non-profit, higher education and international organisations. The data is also available in a range of national currency units.

    Nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments

    The indicator measure the number of nights spent at establishments intended to shelter tourists. "A tourist accommodation establishment is defined as any facility that regularly or occasionally provides short-term accommodation for tourists as a paid service (although the price might be partially or fully subsidised)."
