    Happy Planet Index rank order

    The HPI measures the extent to which countries deliver long, happy, sustainable lives for the people that live in them. The Index uses global data on life expectancy, experienced well-being and Ecological Footprint to calculate this.

    The index is an efficiency measure, it ranks countries on how many long and happy lives they produce per unit of environmental input.

    Environmental Performance Index

    Environmental Performance Index is an indicator that measures environmental performance compared to two main objectives: Environmental Health and Ecosystem Vitality. Environmental Health measures the protection of human health from environmental harm. Ecosystem Vitality measures ecosystem protection and resource management. These two objectives are further divided into nine issue categories that span high-priority environmental policy issues, including air quality, forests, fisheries, and climate and energy, among others.

    Environmental Sustainability Index

    The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) is a measure of overall progress towards environmental sustainability, developed for 146 countries. The index provides a composite profile of national environmental stewardship based on a compilation of 21 indicators derived from 76 underlying data sets.

    Environmental Vulnerability Index

    The Environmental Vulnerability Index is a measure to characterize the relative severity of various types of environmental issues suffered by individual nations and some regions of the planet.

    Global Green Economy Index

    The Global Green Economy Index comprises the Green Perception Survey and the Green Performance Index. Themes investigated are environmental performance, climate change, natural capital, environmental industries and investment, and leadership on these issues.

    Inclusive Wealth Index

    The inclusive wealth index measures all the assets from which human well-being is derived, including manufactured, human and natural capital, i.e. a nation’s capacity to maintain human well-being over time.

    Wildlife Picture Index

    The Wildlife Picture Index (WPI) combines photos from camera traps and relevant environmental data to understand how well efforts to protect biodiversity are functioning. It was designed to address the need for robust biodiversity monitoring indicators to fulfill the Convention on Biological Diversity’s goal to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2020.

    Crop production index

    Crop production index shows agricultural production for each year relative to the base period 2004-2006. It includes all crops except fodder crops.

    Distribution and abundance of animal species

    This indicator is an assessment of the following aspects:
    - Observed latitudinal shifts of four species groups over 25 years in Britain;
    - Temporal trend of bird and butterfly community temperature index across Europe;
    - Projected impact of climate change on the potential distribution of reptiles and amphibians;
    - Projected changes in the climate niche space of the Small Tortoise shell;
    - Changes in mammalian species richness.

    Common bird index

    The indicator is an aggregated index integrating the population abundance and the diversity of a selection of common bird species. Three groups of bird species are presented in this indicator: farmland specialists (39 species), forest specialists (33 species) and all common bird species (farmland species, forest species and a further 91 species).Rare species are excluded.

    Area under organic farming

    The indicator measures the share of total utilized agricultural area occupied by organic farming (existing organically-farmed areas and areas in process of conversion). Organic farming is a method of production, which puts the highest emphasis on environmental protection and, with regard to livestock production, animal welfare considerations.
