    Energy-related emissions of particulate matter

Combination of primary PM10 data, and emissions of secondary PM10 precursors (SO2 and NOx and NH3) weighted using aerosol formation factors (according to de Leeuw, 2002) NOx = 0.88, SO2 = 0.54 and NH3 = 0.64. Gaps in reported data have been filled by EEA/ETC-ACC where necessary using simple interpolation techniques.

    Global and European temperature

This indicator shows absolute changes and rates of change in average near-surface temperature for the globe and for a region covering Europe. (Definition of EEA)

    Municipal waste generation, total

Total Municipal waste consists of waste generated by households primarily, but may also include similar wastes generated by small businesses and public institutions and collected by the municipality.

    Nitrogen oxides emissions

Nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are together referred to as nitrogen oxides (NOX). Combustion of fossil fuels is by far the dominant source of NOX emissions. The emissions are not dependent solely on the amount of nitrogen in the fuel but also on the air - fuel mix ratio. High temperatures and oxidation-rich conditions generally favour NOX formation in combustion.NOX contributes to acid deposition and eutrophication which in turn can lead to potential changes occurring in soil and water quality.

    Species diversity

Species diversity is a measure of the diversity within an ecological community that incorporates both species richness (the number of species in a community) and the evenness of species' abundances. Species diversity is one component of the concept of biodiversity.

    Consumption of ozone-depleting substances

The consumption of ozone-depleting substances is the sum of the consumption of the ozone-depleting potential- weighted metric tons of all ozone-depleting substances controlled under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. (Definition UN statistical handbook)

    Environmental Vulnerability Index

The Environmental Vulnerability Index is a measure to characterize the relative severity of various types of environmental issues suffered by individual nations and some regions of the planet.

    Demand-based CO2 productivity

Real national income per unit of CO2 emitted at various stages of production of the goods and services consumed in domestic final demand, irrespective of where the stages of production occurred. Trends in emissions on this basis serve as a diagnostic complement to the more traditional production based measures.

    Water productivity

The indicator measures how much economic output is produced per cubic meter of fresh water abstracted. It indicates the productivity of water use.

Average carbon dioxide emissions per km from new passenger cars

This indicator is defined as the average emissions of carbon dioxide per kilometre by new passenger cars registered in a given year.

ISO 14001 registered organisations (per mln population)

This indicator provides an overview of ISO 14001 certified companies in European countries. The ISO 14000 environmental management standards exist to help organizations minimize how their operations (processes etc.) negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land), comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements, and continually improve in the above
