    Biological quality of lakes

This indicator represents the Cyanobacteria percentage of total phytoplankton biomass. This is an indicator of eutrophication.

    Ecological Footprint

The Ecological Footprint represents the productive area required to provide the renewable resources humanity is using, as well the area required to absorb the waste emitted.

Emissions of primary particulates — outlook from LRTAP

This indicator tracks trends and presents projections in emissions of primary particulate PM10 and PM2,5.
    "PM10" means particulate matter which passes through a size-selective inlet with a 50 % efficiency cut-off at 10 mm aerodynamic diameter;
"PM2,5" means particulate matter which passes through a size-selective inlet with a 50 % efficiency cut-off at 2,5mm aerodynamic diameter.

    Energy-related emissions of particulate matter

Combination of primary PM10 data, and emissions of secondary PM10 precursors (SO2 and NOx and NH3) weighted using aerosol formation factors (according to de Leeuw, 2002) NOx = 0.88, SO2 = 0.54 and NH3 = 0.64. Gaps in reported data have been filled by EEA/ETC-ACC where necessary using simple interpolation techniques.

    Invasive alien species in Europe

Number of the listed 'worst' terrestrial and freshwater invasive alien species in each country". (EEA, from the title of figure 4 from http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/indicators/invasive-alien-species (http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/indicators/invasive-alien-species...)

Land cover distribution and change — outlook from MNP

Land cover distribution and change is a modeled prediction of the distribution of land-cover types (tropical rain forest; desert; tundra; etc.) across the total world terrestrial area in 2050 based on different scenarios.

    Ecolabel licenses

This indicator is defined as the number of Ecolabel or "EU Flower" licences in European countries. The Community Ecolabel is awarded to products and services with reduced environmental impacts. It is administered by the European Commission and receives the support of all EU Member States and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Ecolabel criteria are discussed in the European Union Ecolabelling Board (EUEB) whose membership includes representatives from industry, environmental protection groups, consumer organisations and representatives for SMEs.

    Group Membership

The extent to which people participate in formal and informal groups in society is an important dimension of social cohesion (OECD, 2005, p. 84))

Soil erosion by water - area eroded by more than 10 tonnes per hectare per year

The indicator assesses the soil loss by water erosion processes (rainsplash, sheetwash and rills) and gives an indication of the area affected by a certain rate of soil erosion (moderate to severe, i.e. >10 tonnes/hectare/year in the OECD definition). This area is expressed in km2 and as a percentage of the total non-artificial area in the country.

    Desire to be Employed

The indicator measures the level of willingness to be employed in percentage.

Dwellings in Deficient State of Repair

Percentage of households living in a dwelling with at least one of the following deficiencies: leaky roof, dampness, rot in window frames or floors.

    Fresh Water Resources

Internal flow and actual external inflow of surface and groundwater in millions of cubic metres per thousands inhabitants.

    Living planet index

The Living Planet Index (LPI) is an indicator of the state of global biological diversity, based on trends in vertebrate populations of species from around the world.

    Water scarcity index

Water scarcity is the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet the demands of water usage within a region.

    Environmental Vulnerability Index

The Environmental Vulnerability Index is a measure to characterize the relative severity of various types of environmental issues suffered by individual nations and some regions of the planet.

    Human Wellbeing Index

The HWI is designed to be a more holistic measure of socioeconomic conditions than narrow monetary indicators such as the Gross Domestic Product. It covers more aspects of human wellbeing than the United Nations’ Human Development Index.

It is the unweighted average of indices of health and population, wealth, knowledge, community and equity. To prevent a high score for equity from offsetting poor human conditions, equity is included in the HWI only when it does not raise the index.

    Population in Education

Proportion of pupils and students from pre-primary to
tertiary education levels in the total population, 2000 and 2009

ISO 14001 registered organisations (per mln population)

This indicator provides an overview of ISO 14001 certified companies in European countries. The ISO 14000 environmental management standards exist to help organizations minimize how their operations (processes etc.) negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land), comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements, and continually improve in the above
